Elisabeth Kumm

Elisabeth is a founding member of the Victoria Theatres Trust. Her series Pets of the Public was a regular feature of On Stage from 1999 to 2005, looking at “forgotten” nineteenth century performers. She continues to contribute articles for the THA website, and from 2018 has been editor of the THA Newsletter. As a theatrical historian and biographer she assisted Viola Tait with her book on pantomime – Dames, Principal Boys…and All That (published by Macmillan in 2001) and also worked with her on her memoirs I Have a Song to Sing (published by THA in 2018). Elisabeth has also undertaken research for the Riley/Hailes Scrapbook and JCW Scene Books projects. Most recently she has been working on the Falk Studios album project including acting as editor of The Falk Studios book (published by THA in 2021).

THOMPSON, Lydia (1838-1908)

English actress, dancer & vocalist. Née Eliza Hodges Thompson. Born 19 February 1838, London, England. Daughter of Philip Thompson (publican) and Eliza Cooper. Married (1) John Tilbury (ring master), 1863, (2) Alexander Henderson (manager), 1868. Died 17 November 1908, London, England, aged 70. Mother of Zeffie Tilbury (actress).

Popular and energetic performer in burlesque, pantomime and comic opera. Performed in theatres throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and was one of the first artistes to take a complete company to USA to great acclaim.

English actress; aka Mrs Arthur Lewis. Born 21 April 1844, England. Daughter of Benjamin Terry and Sarah Ballard. Sister of Ellen Terry (actress), Marion Terry (actress), Florence Terry (actress), Fred Terry (actor), Charles Terry (stage manager) and George Terry (theatre treasurer). Married Arthur James Lewis (of haberdashery firm Lewis & Allenby). Died 6 January 1924, London, England, aged 79. Mother of four daughters including actress Mabel Terry Lewis.

Sister of Kate Terry (actress), Marion Terry (actress), Florence Terry (actress) and Fred Terry (actor). Married (1) George Frederic Watts (artist), 20 February 1964, St Barnabas, Kensington, London, England (div. 1877), (2) EW Godwin (architect) (de facto), (3) James Carew (actor), November 1877 (sep. 1881), (4) James Carew, 22 March 1907, USA. Died 21 July 1928, Small Hythe, Kent, England, aged 81. Mother of Edith Craig (director & costume designer) and Edward Gordon Craig (actor & scenic artist).

On stage as a child. Henry Irving’s leading lady from 1878. Visited Australia 1914-1915 performing excepts from Shakespeare. Created Dame in 1925.
