Melbourne born conductor Alan Barker had an illustrious career both here and abroad. Born on 5 February 1938 he acted as Musical Director on the Garnet-Carroll shows The Sound of Music, Finian’s Rainbow, Robert and Elizabeth, Carousel, The Merry Widow, High Spirits and for J.C. Williamson’s, Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver!, and My Fair Lady

Alan worked as MD for The Australian Ballet for many years and for major international companies such as The Royal Danish Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, for The Scottish Ballet from 1992 until 2006 and The Royal Ballet, conducting his last performance with them in 2007. He worked with many of the world's major ballet artists including Dame Margot Fonteyn, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Galina Samsova and for major choreographers such as Antony Tudor, George Balanchine and Frederick Ashton.

Alan died on 15 December 2025 aged eighty-seven.
