Richard Bradshaw

We’re delighted to announce our forthcoming event with Richard Bradshaw on 21 September 2025 at the Seaborn, Broughton & Walford Foundation in partnership with Theatre Heritage Australia.

Richard Bradshaw, B.Sc. (b. Sydney, 1938) previously taught mathematics and science. Puppetry had been a hobby since 1952 and, in 1969, he stopped teaching to tour a shadow-puppet show for schools, initially for Joan and Betty Rayner. He has since performed for children and adults in Europe, the Americas and Asia, retiring in 2020. In 1976-83 he was Artistic Director of the Marionette Theatre of Australia, based in Sydney.

Jim Henson recorded a one-hour television documentary on his work in Sydney in 1984 as one of a 6-part series shown internationally. Richard’s one-act play, Bananas, published in 1976, has had productions in five countries, including a two-week season in Turku, Finland (in Finnish) in 2004. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1984, shared the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award in 1987 and in 2016 was made a Member of Honour of UNIMA, the international association of puppeteers. (He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1974.)

Join us at 2.30pm at SB&W on 21 September 2025 for The Stage on Sunday, a joint program with the Foundation and Theatre Heritage Australia.
