JCW Scene Book 10

St. James' Theatre Album, London - 1890s (No. 2) Dimensions: 40 x 28 (landscape) The photos would have been used as guides or as inspiration for the Australian scenic artists working on the same productions. These images are of George Alexander productions for St. James' Theatre, King Street, London (built 1835, demolished 1957). The theatre's most brilliant period came under this management - 1891 to 1918 - with the production of very significant plays by Oscar Wilde, Arthur Wing Pinero, Henry James, Henry Arthur Jones and William Shakespeare.

Originally a SHARE REGISTER, CALL & TRANSFER BOOK (Fred. G. Lewis - Stationer - 1910). Dimensions: 50 x 37 x 9 Photos show sets, back-cloths, some with lighting-bars. Production title and act are in pencil, as are the page numbers. There are a few printed program segments attached, relating to individual scenes.

JCW Scene Book 7

This was a ledger produced by Syd Day, General Printer and Stationer, Melbourne, in 1908. Dimensions: 64 x 51 x 6 No production dates are given but images include stage-settings, lighting-bars, props, cloths, etc. Contents are listed alphabetically. The photos end at page 55, followed by many blank leaves.

This was originally an 1890s' accounts book (William Detmold, Stationers) - accounts which can be discerned beneath the photos - for Rent Shops, Gallery, Princess Theatre - admission prices, wages, etc. Dimensions: 49 x 40 x 12 The photos date from the mid 1920s and are accompanied by varying items of information, occasionally the set-painter is mentioned and sometimes a date is given.

This volume was produced by Troedel & Cooper, Bookbinders, and dates from 1911 to 1920s. Dimensions: 63 x 51 x 6 There are indexes inside the front cover and on the back page. The contents comprise plans and elevations, drawn in ink and/or pencil to a scale of half an inch to the foot (ratio 1 to 24 - in common use today the ratio is 1 to 25). No dates attach to the individual pages and very rarely is there mention of a scenic artist.

This "plain paper" volume dates from the 1920s. Dimensions: 52 x 34 x 8 Inside the front cover there is a list of productions with page numbers. By each photo the production title and act are given, but there is no mention of designer or artist, no dates or measurements. The photos show sets, curtains with projections, cut-, back- and front-cloths, props, lighting bars, etc.

This is an unused SHARE REGISTER for the SISTERS GOLD MINING COMPANY. Dimensions: 51 x 38 x 10 The dates range from 1902 to 1931. Beside each image information on the production is hand- and/or type-written - eg. the artist, the condition of the cloth or border, etc. Several photos are pasted onto a narrow central strip - possibly these are Sydney productions.
